The Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail (PNT) follows the northern edge of the U.S/Canadian border, shooting 1,200 miles through the Continental Divide in Montana, across the Rocky Mountains to the North Cascades, and finally over the moutainous Olympic Peninsula before ending at the Pacific Ocean and the rugged coastline of Washington state.
The Pacific Northwest Trail Association (PNTA) advocated for creation of the trail in the 1970s. After many years of lobbying, on March 2009 legislation designating the PNT as a national scenic trail was signed by President Obama.
Unique features of the PNT include its waterway crossings, including a scenic ferry ride across Puget Sound to Port Townsend, Washington and an inlet-crossing at a fishing village in the Quileute Indian Reservation.
