The Ice Age National Scenic Trail highlights the visible remnants of glaciers blanketing the Great Lakes region during the last Ice Age. Visitors can see vivid effects of this era today, including “potholes” and “kettles” as well as other glacial activity.
The trail is located entirely within Wisconsin and travels through many regions of the state, beginning at Lake Michigan’s shoreline. From there the route begins a loop south around the city of Madison, then sharply north into a beautiful region that includes Devils Lake (pictured above). The route continues to the state line north of St. Paul, Minnesota.
Wildlife sightings are common along the trail and can include fox, white-tailed deer, woodpeckers, bald eagles, porcupine and black bears.
